General Engineering Training
General Engineering is a nonspecific field of study within the discipline of engineering that provides fundamental courses in each of the principle areas of engineering: mechanical, civil, chemical and electrical. The intention is to afford the student familiarity with the principles of engineering. A General Engineering curriculum is often associated with pursuit of a degree in other fields, such as law or business, where supplemental engineering knowledge may be desirable. Many technical and community colleges also offer training in General Engineering to give students the exposure necessary to make an intelligent choice regarding a specific area of engineering as they continue their studies at a four-year college.

General Engineering Courses
Students engaged in General Engineering Training will study the same core subjects as other engineering undergraduates. The focus will be on science, particularly physics and chemistry, with complementary Courses in mathematics. One can expect to receive instruction in writing and oral communication, including a course specific to developing technical writing skills. There will also be instruction in “hands-on” technical subjects such as computer aided drafting, preparation of construction specifications, and surveying. It is the inclusion of courses of this nature that appeals to students whose experience or preference is in construction or field application of engineering design.
Those who enter the employment market with a General Engineering degree typically find that their training is suitable for employment in a variety of fields including construction management, construction inspection, technical writing, and facility maintenance operations. The Work Environment will include time in the office as well as on the job site participating in a variety of activities associated with bringing a project from the design stage to physical completion. Because advanced studies are not associated with this degree, employment in an engineering design firm will be usually in a position commonly identified as design engineer. This is a team position under the supervision of a project engineer who possesses a degree with concentrated courses in the field for which the company provides services. The Salary range is usually between $35,000 to $55,000 per year depending upon the type of work and one’s experience.
